Introducing Thermometer Survey

The recent volatility in financial markets demonstrates just how quickly public opinion can shift on an issue.  While the world is fortunate to not yet have experienced a climatic ‘trigger event’ equivalent to the recent failure of some large US financial institutions, attitudes toward global climate change can be just as susceptible to wild swings in public opinion as attitudes towards the global financial system.  However, following public opinion is about more than watching the polls.

Thermometer Survey is a four stage research based process designed to inform risk management processes and help organisations develop action plans based on sound understanding of how people are reacting, or will react in the future, to climate change.

If you got it wrong, what would you put at risk?

Shareholder value

Reputex, “Identifying Carbon Value: The carbon responsiveness of ASX 200 stocks,” 2007

The overall preparedness of Australia’s top 200 companies to address Climate Change risk is low and only 20 percent of these companies are positioned to manage Climate Change risk. This has implications for the financial value and performances of these businesses.

Brand and corporate reputation

PriceWaterhouseCoopers “Carbon Countdown: A survey of executive opinion on climate Change in the countdown to a carbon economy,” January 2008

Thirty-five percent of business leaders expect that the market perception of their responses to Climate Change and other sustainability issues will create opportunities for their brand and reputation in the market place.

Political support

The Economist, November 29, 2007

Mr Rudd has learned what many national leaders elsewhere will discover in the next few years: that Climate Change is now an election issue. Mr Howard was perhaps in office too long to sense that... The Climate Change debate points to a broader electoral truth: nations like to feel proud of themselves. Winning, in fact, is not enough, even in Australia: you have to do it right.

Australia's future

Professor Ross Garnaut, "Garnaut Climate Change Review", 2008

How Australia fares in a world of Climate Change will depend on how the global and Australian economies and environments adapt to the impacts of climate Change.
