A Harvard-trained communicator and researcher, Randall Pearce sees Climate Change as a social issue as much as an environmental one.

Prior to starting THINK, Randall founded the Australian public affairs division of the international research firm Ipsos, where he was the primary author of the Ipsos Mackay Report, Australia’s longest-running programme of social research.

In 2006, Randall was selected by the Australian Conservation Foundation to be one of the first to be trained as a Climate Messenger by Nobel-laureate Al Gore. Since then he has spoken to thousands of people about Climate Change across Australia and New Zealand.

Randall is the recipient of the prestigious Jacob W Wittmer Award for excellence in the use of research in communication from the International Association of Business Communicators.

As co-founder of Thermometer Surveys, Randall heads-up the Qualitative team and will be the leading faciliator in the Risk Management Workshops.

Dr Dedee Woodside
Ecologist, Community Development Specialist

Dedee is the director of Corporate and Community Sustainability International, a consultancy devoted to providing social and environmental advice and capacity building services in relation to natural resource management and biodiversity conservation. She facilitates cross-disciplinary projects in developing countries and the rural sector. She has a formal background in ecology and community development and specializes in community engagement, knowledge sharing and change management.

Dedee has previously headed up an international training institute for developing countries, served as a senior public servant and as general manager and director of both Taronga and Western Plains Zoos. She currently serves on boards of a number of major conservation and research and development organisations and is a climate messenger with the Australian Conservation Foundation's Climate Project.

Dedee brings an expertise in environmental, community development and research arena to the Thermometer Team.

Dr Iain Butterworth
Community Psychologist, Fulbright Scholar

Iain is a community psychologist with 20 year's experience in community and organisational development, government, higher education and consulting. His PhD in environmental adult education investigated ways to engage citizens in community action on local environmental issues. In 2003-2004 Iain was a Fulbright Scholar at Berkeley, investigating the World Health Organisation's 'Healthy Cities' approach. These initiatives are characterised by a broad-based, intersectoral political commitment to health and well-being; innovation; democratic community participation; and a resultant healthy public policy.

Iain brings to the Thermometer team extensive experience in engaging government, business, NGOs and citizens in collaborative approaches to build social capital, environmental capital and economic capital.

Damien Arthur
Youth Marketing Specialist
Lecturer in charge of Consumer Behaviour, University of Adelaide

Damien is a lecturer in Consumer Behaviour and a PhD Candidate in Marketing at the University of Adelaide. His PhD thesis is a qualitative investigation of the symbolic role of consumption in the lives of today's youth. His work has been published in a number of international marketing publications. Damien is also active professionally and regularly provides marketing advice and market research services to clients interested in understanding and communication with Australia's young adults.

Damien's theoretical understanding of the consumer decision making process and practical experience in researching the opinions, values and attitudes of today's youth contribute considerable value to the Thermometer team.   

Dr Wendy Hillman
Environmental Sociologist
Lecturer, Central Queensland University

Wendy understands the role the environment has to play in the Australian response to Climate Change. She is trained in both environmental sociology and the sociology of tourism and currently lectures in the Department of Behavioural and Social Sciences at Central Queensland University in Rockhampton. Prior to joining Thermometer Survey, Wendy researched, worked and travelled extensively in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia. Part of her work has been to investigate the links between the importance of the environment and its status of 'place'. 

Wendy applies this understanding at the intersection of the environment and tourism and will contribute her significant sectoral knowledge to Thermometer's findings.                       

 

 

Trained in architecture, auditing and applied business, Tom Mitchell-Taverner understands the role of the built environment and the commercial imperatives behind our response to Climate Change.

Prior to joining Taverner, Tom project managed major transport infrastructure projects in Europe and the Middle East. Tom understands risk management and has extensive experience in implementing and auditing quality assurance and environmental management systems.

Tom has an active hands-on role in Thermometer Survey leading both the Quantitative and Administrative teams.

Philip Mitchell-Taverner

Philip has over 40 years experience in business management and the design and conduct of Market and Social Research projects. Philip founded Taverner Research in 1995 with the aim of providing high quality research to a diverse range of clients - the business continues to grow today under his continued leadership and now employs over 25 full time staff in both Sydney and Canberra.

Dr Don Poritt
Adjunct Associate Professor, Management and Marketing, Charles Sturt University
Senior Research Director, Taverner Research

Don has spent over 30 years specialising in market and social research including 15 years as a Director with AMR Interactive, and eight years leading a substantial research program in the NSW Department of Corrective Services. He is a Foundation Member of the Australian Psychological Society, a long term member of the market and social research society (AMSRS) and the Australasian Evaluation Society.

Don took a leading role at AMR Interactive in introducing innovative syndicated services into the Australian industry, drawing on his strong background in social research, including the Australian Social Monitor and Australia SCANSM measures of social attitudes and values, and the Reputation QuotientSM measure of corporate reputations.

His publications include articles in the Australasian Journal of Market & Social Research, Corporate Reputation Review, The Asian Journal of Market Research, Social Science and Medicine, Australian Journal of Psychology and Australian Psychologist, and he has been invited speaker to conferences on the mature market, baby boomers, the youth market, and on market segmentation.

Don's practical experience and strong academic background adds value to Thermometer through his understanding and application of research design, questionnaire development, data analysis and reporting techniques, the latest developments in marketing theory, social psychology and social research methodology.

Dr David Dufty
Research Consultant, Taverner Research

David specialises in research design, advanced statistics, data collection and analysis and project management. His background includes five years as a visiting Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Memphis, where he lectured in research methods, research design and statistics, and has also worked with the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet analysing and reporting statistics on the characteristics of the NSW government labour force.

David's theoretical understanding of the research process and practical background as an educator and thought leader and knowledge of the public sector will add considerable value to Thermometer Survey in survey design and analysis of the findings.

Lisa Zipparo
Senior Research Director, Taverner Research

Lisa has extensive public sector research and evaluation experience and has published numerous papers in research journals. Lisa is a qualified neuropsychologist with specialist skills in applied statistical techniques, behavioural and attitudinal measurement and cognitive testing. These skills will add further to the interpretative analyses for Thermometer reporting.

Patrick Meza
Research Operations Manager, Taverner Research

Patrick brings to Thermometer an operational perspective through more than 12 years specialisfing in fieldwork and data management. He will be managing the data collection and data processing phases, ensuring the delivery and presentation of high quality information.
